Frequently Asked Questions about Wrist Wraps

What are wrist wraps used for?

Wrist wraps are essential lifting accessories used to provide wrist support and stability during heavy lifting. Whether you're performing bench presses, overhead presses, or Olympic lifts, wrist wraps for lifting weights help protect the joint and improve performance by reducing stress and strain on the wrist.

Why should you use wrist wraps?

Wrist wraps provide wrist support by helping to keep your wrists in a strong, neutral position during lifts. This alignment reduces unwanted movement and strain, allowing you to lift heavier weights with greater control. Weight training wrist wraps can also help reduce pain and discomfort for individuals with existing wrist issues, making it possible to train safely and consistently. When used properly, they help prevent hyperextension and minimize the risk of injury during heavy lifts—especially in exercises like the bench press or overhead press.

Why should you use wrist wraps?

You should use wrist wraps when you're lifting near your max weight or if you experience wrist discomfort during your lifting movements.

Common exercises include:

  • Bench press
  • Overhead press
  • Clean and jerk
  • Snatch
  • Dips

For weight training wrist wraps, it’s best to use them when lifting above 75–80% of your 1RM or when your wrists feel strained.

How do you put on wrist wraps?

How to Use Our Belt Loop Tightening System:

Watch How to Video

  1. Feed the tab end (with the Villain rubber label) through the belt loop on the opposite end of the wrist wrap. This will create a secure loop or hole.
  2. Slide your hand through the loop so the wrap rests comfortably just above your wrist joint.
  3. Pull the tab end firmly to cinch the wrist wrap down and create a snug, supportive fit.
  4. Wrap the remaining length around your wrist to your desired tightness.
  5. Secure it in place using the Velcro closure.

💡 Tip: The tighter you pull, the more wrist support you’ll get—but make sure it’s still comfortable and doesn’t cut off circulation.

How tight should wrist wraps be?

Your wrist wraps should be snug but not painfully tight. They should offer firm compression to limit excessive movement while still allowing blood flow. Properly fitted wrist wraps for lifting give you the right balance between mobility and support.

How do I choose the best wrist wraps for lifting?

When selecting wrist wraps for weightlifting, consider:

  • Longer wraps (20"+) offer more support and are great for powerlifting. Shorter ones are better for general gym use.
  • Stiffer wraps provide maximum support, while softer wraps offer more flexibility for dynamic lifts.

You can take our Wrist Wrap Quiz to find out which wrist wraps are right for you!

Can wrist wraps help prevent injuries?

Absolutely. One of the biggest benefits of using weightlifting wrist wraps is injury prevention. They keep your wrists in a neutral position and reduce strain during repetitive or heavy lifts. This is especially helpful during movements like the bench press or overhead presses, which put immense stress on the wrists.

Are your wrist wraps USPA-approved?

Yes, our wrist wraps are USPA-recommended, making them suitable for use in official powerlifting competitions. You’ll get the performance and compliance needed to compete confidently.

How do I clean and care for wrist wraps?

To ensure the longevity of your wrist wraps:

  • Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent.
  • Air dry—avoid using a dryer, which can break down elastic fibers

Keeping your wraps clean also helps maintain their stretch, elasticity, and overall performance in the gym.

Are wrist wraps allowed in competitions?

Yes, most powerlifting federations—including the USPA—allow the use of wrist wraps during competition. Always double-check the federation’s guidelines to ensure your wraps meet their standards.

Our products are built to comply with the length and width guidelines established for competitive strength gear. (check with your federation)
